    Dropping the Puck on Cancer

                                        The Year of Discovery

In 2011, leaders from Indiana University’s Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Chi
Fraternities organized a philanthropically oriented hockey game
involving members of each organization. Although small and last
minute, the event’s organizers were fully aware of the potential of
such an event and the success it would realize with more time and
proper planning.

In 2011, the event did not have financial budgets in place due to time
constraints. There was no target revenue and the goal was to earn more
than what was spent on the event’s costs to donate to various
charities. Through fantastic support by Indiana’s community, the event
raised $2,600 in just a three-week period from planning to executing
the event. Because of the short timeline, the event targeted no
specific philanthropies. Rather, the money was split between the two
largest philanthropies on Indiana’s campus: Zeta Tau Alpha’s “Big Man
on Campus” (BMOC) supporting the Susan G Komen foundation and Indiana
University Dance Marathon (IUDM) supporting Riley Childrens’ Hospital.
With over 350 in attendance, the game was played at Frank Southern
Arena in Bloomington, IN and the organizers walked away content with
the outcome, though with even loftier goals in mind for 2012.  This
year’s game will be held at Frank Southern Ice Arena on February 24,
2012 beginning at 10pm and we expect the event to sell out fast!!
